What is a security clearance and how do I obtain one?

A security clearance is a certification that is granted by the Canadian Industrial Security Directorate (CISD) of Public Works and Government Services Canada. These clearances are required by the Government of Canada for certain contracts, and once granted, allows you to work on their premises and, if required, to have access to confidential or sensitive information.

To obtain a security clearance, you must be sponsored by an organization that holds a valid facility clearance. Pursuant to the Candian and International Industrial Directorate (CIISD) policy, we can sponsor you through the security screening process when you are to be employed by Calian on a contract that requires access to a work site or to classified or protected information.

According to the CIISD's web site:

Government Security Policy requires that individuals undergo a personnel-screening process if their duties or tasks necessitate access to CLASSIFIED/PROTECTED information and assets. This applies to all positions and to all phases of the contracting process, or when an individual's duties or tasks require access to essential persons or installations critical to the national interest that are deemed to afford regular and consistent access to classified information and assets. This process usually involves reference inquiries, verification of qualifications, criminal records checks and, as required, credit checks. Until the required checks are complete, individuals cannot have access to CLASSIFIED/PROTECTED information, assets and/or certain restricted work sites.

Security clearances that are typically required include:
  • Reliability Status
  • Level I (Confidential)
  • Level II (Secret)
  • Level III (Top Secret)
