Networking

In today's job market, knowing how to sell yourself and taking the initiative in developing a strong network is integral to finding the job you want.

This proactive job searching strategy is one of the best ways to tap into the hidden job market and give companies the opportunity to hire through someone they know and trust.

Steps for Effective Networking

1. Identify your network
Contacts who can aid in your job search may come not only from your most recent contract, but also from professional organizations or social groups.
For example:
  • Professional/trade associations
  • Former and current classmates
  • Contacts made at conferences and workshops
  • Neighbours, immediate and extended family

2. Make first contact
Make your intentions clear, and let people know that any guidance or referrals would be appreciated.
  • Talk with people you know who work in your area of interest; keep a record of their name and contact information
  • Follow-up with the contacts you meet. Leave a professional message to thank them for their time and advice.
  • Keep at it. Networking for the right career takes time, effort, initiative and patience. A large network of professional contacts will help get your name out there and increase your chances of getting a job.

3. Follow up
Once you have established the beginnings of your network, remember the following:
  • Stay in touch with people. Provide periodic updates (anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month) to let people know you are still in the market.
  • Whenever someone has taken time to help you out, even if it did not result in a job opportunity, write a thank-you note. This will be doubly effective as it will remind them of your cause, and will demonstrate your enthusiasm.
